At the start of August 2010 Martin Kaymer was undoubtedly a European star with 13 minor and main tour victories in just five years. All he needed to do was step up to world class and having finished in the top eight at three of his previous four majors it seemed that transition was imminent. At Whistling Straits he duly delivered, finishing victorious in the PGA Championship. It was difficult to judge which was more impressive on that final day: the 25-year-old German's unflappable temperament or his finely tuned and beautifully measured golf. Certainly his manner is reminiscent of his fellow countryman Bernhard Langer's and if he can be as successful in the Ryder Cup environment, Europe have a long-term stalwart about to make his debut. If there is one concern it relates to his lack of experience in team golf and the fact that he's won just two of five matches in the WGC World Matchplay event. On the other hand he did take up Sir Nick Faldo's invitation to attend the 2008 Ryder Cup as an observer so has experience of the cauldron that is the Ryder Cup first tee.
