Like Padraig Harrington, the Englishman was selected by his captain ahead of two fine alternatives, Justin Rose and Paul Casey. But Donald had a strong case for inclusion. He has played in just two Ryder Cups - in 2004 and 2006 - and has finished on the winning side both times. In those two matches he has played seven times and lost just once, adding one half and five victories. If there is one doubt it is that four of those wins came when he played alongside Sergio Garcia in the foursomes - they are an unbeaten combination but one that will not be further tested due to the Spaniard's poor form in 2010. The Ryder Cup is not Donald's only experience of team golf, nor is it his only familiarity with victory outside individual competition - he also won the 2004 World Cup alongside Paul Casey. The captain was always keen on Donald for the Ryder Cup because of his reliability and consistency. If he can find another capable partner he may well impress again.
