Campbell qualified for both the 2004 and 2006 Ryder Cups by right, but needed a wildcard from Azinger to ensure his presence at Valhalla. With the American captain selecting debutants with his three other picks, Campbell's Cup experience got him the nod, although - unsurprisingly given Europe's thumping wins - his past record is hardly the stuff of legends. Lost both his fourball matches at Oak Hill before bouncing back with a resounding victory over Luke Donald in the singles, but had to watch on as the same player exacted revenge on the Sunday at the K Club, with Campbell halving his other matches. He finished 21st on the US points list and it looked like being much worse than that at one stage as he missed six cuts in eight events between March and June. However, he rediscovered some form over the last couple of months with three top-10s in July and August catching Azinger's eye. Despite that, his selection still came as something of a surprise with the likes of Zach Johnson, Brandt Snedeker, Sean O'Hair and Rocco Mediate all having finished ahead of him in the points race and having been widely expected to feature before him.
