A season that began with so much promise is threatening to fizzle out completely for the Englishman. Second in his season-opener in Abu Dhabi, he then completed a first win on the PGA Tour with victory in the WGC World Matchplay Championship and entered the majors confident of continuing his recent solid form at the highest stage. When he led the Masters after two rounds, that hope seemed well placed but weekend scores of 74 and 73 saw him slide down the leaderboard. Weeks later he injured himself playing basketball and his season has never recovered. He finished 18th in the Open de France but that is his only top 40 finish in his last seven starts. Although he missed the cut when he first played the PGA Championship in 2001, his last seven starts have all been four day affairs, but only once has he made the top 10 - at Medinah in 2006 when he was ninth.
