A five-time winner on the Sunshine Tour, the short South African was well-known to European Tour observers as a player of great promise, but his inability to convert winning opportunities was becoming a long-term problem. In March he fluffed a big lead in Morocco but one week later he righted that situation, claiming a maiden European Tour title in the Open de Andalucia. Between then and July he offered no clues that more was to come, but a visit to mind coach Dr Karl Morris shortly before the Open reaped huge dividends as a spot drawn on his glove acted as the perfect trigger for him to switch his concentration on and off. The comprehensive thumping of the field that followed was a surprise to even those who respected his talent, mostly because the hesitant leader of the past was now transformed into a Tiger-like leader from the front. One week later in Sweden his form remained but his mind was less at ease, perhaps understandably. Back to back majors are a rarity but if he can rediscover that confidence, then who knows?
