Back in May McDowell's final round partner in the BMW PGA Championship, Simon Khan, swept his way to a stunning victory and the Northern Irishman admitted it could, perhaps should, have been him. The realisation seemed to invigorate him because in his next three starts he finished fourth in the Madrid Masters, won the Wales Open and then stunned the world when winning the US Open at Pebble Beach. He followed that magical month with a fortnight of celebrating which he has subsequently admitted might not have been the most sensible reaction - on return to the course he felt physically and mentally tired and distracted. But his disappointment ought to be relative - he was 21st in the Scottish Open, 23rd in the Open and 31st in the Irish Open. Those results suggest that his swing and form remain good, all that needs addressing is his mental approach. He missed the cut at Whistling Straits last time the event was played there but he has finished 15th and 10th in the last two years of the event.
