The upright German initially found links golf a tough challenge. "I hated it the first time I saw it at Carnoustie in the Boys' Amateur," he said. "But I enjoy it now and the low, running shots you need to hit. I would like more links courses on tour." He proved he had come to terms with the unique challenge when he made a play-off for the 2008 Dunhill Links Championship (which he ultimately lost to Robert Karlsson). In his two Open Championship appearances he has made the cut but done little at the weekend (finishing 80th and 34th). However, the sheer weight of statistics makes him a lively candidate for success: he has won five times in just 95 starts at European, PGA and WGC tour level. He also seems to be coming to terms with major golf: he was sixth at the USPGA last August and then eighth in last month's US Open. One thing he won't lack is the stomach for the fight if he is in contention - the man is a born winner.
