Towards the end of 2009 Poulter won the Singapore Open and it heralded a fine run of form which peaked with his victory in the WGC World Matchplay Championship - a first WGC win and apparently proof that he had found his feet at the top of the world game. An exciting year of major golf loomed and when he held the lead at Augusta after two rounds he seemed ready to step up the very highest level. But he struggled in round three at Augusta, then injured himself playing basketball and two weeks ago he was bitten by a spider during a barbecue. The bite became infected and he thought he may not be able to play in the Open de France. It was somehow typical of how his 2010 season has gone downhill. He has, however, been runner-up in the Open Championship, third at St Andrews in the Dunhill Links Championship and will be inspired by the feats of his good friend Justin Rose. He's never more dangerous on the golf course than when he feels he has a point to prove.
