When the Northern Irishman walked off the course after his final round at Wentworth the frustration was plain to see: he had watched his playing partner Simon Khan race to victory. "Should have been me," he told reporters, not out of bitterness but acknowledging that he was close to that form and capable of winning. Since then he has finished fourth in Madrid, won the Celtic Manor Wales Open and then triumphed magnificently at Pebble Beach to claim a first major title, the US Open. His confidence is sky high and he has a great background in links golf. He was brought up playing it, he was second in the Dunhill Links Championship in 2004 and has twice led the Open Championship after round one. If there is one doubt it must be that any golfer who has achieved what he has in the last few weeks will be in some sort of state of flux. He might be able to ride the wave, but the chances are that, as he suggested at Loch Lomond, he will be a little emotionally drained.
