The young Northern Irishman has done many impressive things in his short career but his debuts in the American majors last year are one of the least talked about - and yet they were highly impressive. He was 20th at Augusta, third at Hazeltine in the PGA and sandwiched in between those efforts was a 10th place at Bethpage in the US Open. That week - one that traditionally makes most Europeans crumble - he ranked fourth in all-round game and fourth for total driving. Since then he actually turned in his worst major performance to date - a missed cut at Augusta that had him muttering about the need for a break from the game. But just weeks later he shot 66-62 to astonish and obliterate one of the strongest fields of the year at Quail Hollow. Tenth at Jack Nicklaus' Memorial Tournament (where he ranked first for ball-striking) he is clearly back in form and his game is a marvellous fit for Pebble Beach with his long, high and accurate approaches perfect for the small, bone-hard greens.
