For several years Mahan has been feted as one of the finest drivers on the PGA Tour because he is not just long but straight. It is why so many observers have always fancied him in this event and his results have always backed up that notion. Since he turned professional he has played it three times and has always impressed: he was 13th at Oakmont in 2007, 18th at Torrey Pines in 2008 and sixth at Bethpage last year. But if those results suggest he will be worth watching this week, his record at Pebble Beach in the AT&T Pro-am gives pause for thought: in seven visits he has only twice made the top 20 and never finished better than 14th. The conditions this week will suit him more, though, so it is fair to say that he still has a chance. The only other concerns are his ability to convert good play into wins (his victory at Scottsdale earlier this year is only his second in 181 starts) and his form which has nose-dived in the last few weeks.
