The 34-year-old from Hitchin was probably best known for his colourful outfits - notably his trousers - up until two years ago. But his second place in the 2008 Open Championship at Royal Birkdale proved the catalyst for a surge up the world rankings to his current seventh place. The Englishman was pipped by Padraig Harrington at the Southport links but his performance earned him a Ryder Cup call-up and he responded with four points - the best haul of any of the 24 players in action at Valhalla. Last year Poulter was second in the Players Championship - his best performance on American soil up to then. He subsequently won the Singapore Open and second place in Abu Dhabi at the start of this year saw him enter the world's top 10. The highlight of his career to date came just weeks ago as he played imperiously on his way to victory in the WGC World Matchplay - his first win in America and his first WGC title moving him to a career-high fifth in the world. Famously claimed to be second in ability only to Tiger Woods - that does not look quite so ridiculous as it once did. He has made the cut on all five of his Augusta starts and shown up on the leaderboard so this could be a big chance for Poulter to bag a first major title.
