Ever since his first PGA Tour victory - the 2007 Travelers Championship - Mahan has been touted as one of America's next big things. And yet for the next two and a half years he seemed to specialise in doing just enough to remain a promising player without ever doing anything substantial like win a tournament. Which probably made his win in this year's Phoenix Open all the sweeter. One thing Mahan has in his favour is a game that seems to thrive at the big events - he has recorded seven top 20 finishes in the majors, including top tens in the Open Championship, the US Open and here in the Masters. Last year his putting was hot on the slick surfaces of Augusta National and his ball-striking is unquestionably solid, especially from the tee. His self-confessed weakness is around the greens however - not an ideal flaw when faced with the slippery recovery shots this course calls for.
