Love III wins Wyndham Champs
Davis Love III became the third-oldest winner in PGA history as he won his third Wyndham Championship title by one stroke on Sunday.
While the 51-year-old was celebrating his victory after firing a closing 64, Tiger Woods was left ruing his final round performance as he needed to win the tournament or finish in outright second to book his spot in next week’s FedEx Cup playoffs.
Woods stole the spotlight in the first three rounds in Greensboro with his best golf of the season. However, the former world number one was unable to end strongly and carded a level-par 70 to finish in a tie for 10th.
Love III, who finished on 17-under-par, notched up a final-round 64 that included four birdies, including three in a row from the second to the fourth hole, two bogeys and eagles at the par-five fifth and par-five 15th to earn himself a place in the FedEx Cup playoffs.
Woods meanwhile did not get off to the best of starts and was level par for the round after the opening nine. However, things got even worse for the 39-year-old as he triple bogeyed the 11th before missing a 39-foot par putt at the next hole for his second bogey of the round.
Three consecutive birdies from the 13th to the 15th hole saw him recover somewhat before he closed with a birdie at the 18th to finish four strokes behind Love III on 13-under-par.
Jason Gore finished second after hitting a one-under-par 69 on Sunday, which included one birdie, two bogeys and a brilliant 25-foot eagle putt at the 15th.
Charl Schwartzel, Paul Casey and Scott Brown finished two shots off the lead in a tie for third after finishing on 15-under for the tournament.
Brooks Koepka, Bill Haas, Carl Pettersson and Webb Simpson were in a tie for sixth, three shots back, after closing out their tournaments on 14-under.
