Streb breaks putter, uses wedge
Robert Streb fell just short of winning the Greenbrier Classic on Sunday, losing out in a play-off – an incredible result considering he played the back nine without a putter.
The head of Streb’s Scotty Cameron putter came off when he innocently tossed it to his caddie after completing the ninth hole.
The Rules of Golf dictate that a player cannot replace a club if the damage to the club does not occur in the normal course of play, and so Streb, who was on the first page of the leaderboard at the time, had to play the remainder of his round without a putter.
Streb decided that his sand wedge was the next best thing, and he produced some incredible results with his new tool.
The American holed five birdie putts in his closing nine holes to enter into a four-man play-off, where he would eventually lose out to Danny Lee.
His most impressive effort was certainly at the 13th, where Streb rolled in a 30 footer to tie for the lead.
But having bogeyed the 17th, he needed to sink a five foot putt for a birdie and the share of the clubhouse lead…and he obliged.
It’s worth noting that the 28-year-old was able to add a putter to his bag for the play-off, where he was bundled out after the opening hole.
