Weisberger wins Open de France
Bernd Wiesberger claimed the Open de France title following a closing 65 on Sunday afternoon in Paris.
The Austrian’s sizzling six under 65 would be enough for a three stroke win at a sun-baked Le Golf National in Paris.
The now three-time European Tour winner edged England’s James Morrison, who finished ten under par for the event, enough to close on his own in second place.
Wiesberger was simply flawless in the final round, carding 31 on the front nine which included a run of birdies from the fourth to the seventh, backing it up with another gain on the par five ninth. The back nine saw a string of pars and a birdie from 15 foot on the par four final hole to finish in style.
The win is his sixth top ten finish in 17 starts in 2015. The man from Vienna also picks up €500 000, the biggest pay check of his career.
“It’s been a great first half of the year for me so far,” quipped the 29-year-old on europeantour.com.
“I’ve had a lot of great success but just couldn’t pull it quite off. To stand here with the trophy right now, it’s pretty sweet.
“I just hit a great shot down the fourth before the horns were blowing and they took us off the course. I liked my yardage, and had a good shot in there and had some momentum building, chipped in, holed a long putt.
“I felt really comfortable out there. I had a great weekend, only one bogey, and 66, 65 – that’s not a bad score.”
Jaco van Zyl, the leader going into the final round, would have to settle for third place on his own after shooting a disappointing two over 73. One stroke back was former US Open winner Martin Kaymer, who finished on seven under for the event, six shots off the pace.
