Fowler: The fans were awesome
Despite the trying conditions, Rickie Fowler revealed that he enjoyed his time at the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open over the weekend.
The high winds and odd shower at Royal County Down tested the field, with only five players achieving an under par score for the tournament.
However, the crowds poured in nonetheless, with around 80 000 coming through the gates over the four days.
Many would have come to cheer Rory McIlory on his home turf, whose foundation was hosting the event. Fowler was paired with the world number one for the opening two rounds, but McIlroy failed to make the cut.
“I had a great time…the fans were awesome at one of my favourite golf courses in the world,” said the 26-year-old on irishtimes.com.
“It was really cool to be asked by a good friend, Rory, to come over and play and support his Foundation.
“With what he did and what his Foundation did this week for the tournament and everything they are doing for children’s cancer is pretty special. So I’m happy to be a part of it and looking forward to doing more things together.”
The American was in the running, especially after his eagle on the par four 16th in the third round which took him to two under. But things can change quickly at the links course, as Fowler found out when he conspired to card back-to-back 8’s to end his round.
“The wind was a bit stronger than it has been but I wouldn’t say any tougher than it has been throughout the week,” added Fowler.
“At least we were staying dry out there, not having to worry about the showers coming through. It’s a fair test. It’s tough. You have to hit some good shots and be in control of your golf ball.”
Fowler would finish in seven over par, tied for 30th and nine shots off the leaders.
