Hubbard in front in Puerto Rico

Mark Hubbard leads the Puerto Rico Open by one stroke after the opening round on Thursday.

Hubbard carded a four under 68 in breezy conditions at Trump International to take a one shot lead over fellow Americans Billy Mayfair, Chris Smith and Argentine Emiliano Grillo.

After going one under on his first nine, Hubbard finished strong with four birdies over his last six holes, including a bogey on the eighth.

“I drove it pretty well, kept it in the fairway and made a lot of solid five and six-footers,” the 26-year-old told Sky Sports.

“It played tough out there with the wind.”

Meanwhile, former world number one David Duval is two shots off the pace on two under. The 43-year-old is looking for his first win since the 2001 Open Championship.

“I hit it good and I putted really well,” said Duval.

“I made a couple to keep me going, two-putted several times from 25 to 40 feet and didn’t have to sweat over the second one.”
