Laird three ahead in Phoenix

Martin Laird raced to the top of the leaderboard at the Waste Management Phoenix Open on Saturday.

Laird, who represents Scotland but has been living in Arizona since he turned professional in 2004, carded a three under 68 in a topsy-turvy round, to take a three shot lead into the final day.

The Scot started with a bogey on the opening hole but birdied the third and fourth. Another bogey on the fifth left Laird on even terms. The Glaswegian found some consistency through the middle of the round, rolling in three birdies on the way to the 15th tee.

However, Laird’s drive found the water on the par five, which lead to a dropped shot. A birdie on the 17th and a lengthy par saving putt on the 18th ended his round.

“Today was a little bit of everything,” the 32-year-old told Sky Sports.

“I hit some of my best shots and some of my worst. Obviously, I’m happy to extend my lead. I’m going to have to play better tomorrow.”

The chasing pack, sitting on ten under, consists of former Masters winner Zach Johnson, Brooks Koepka and Japanese superstar Hideki Matsuyama.
