Westwood rebounds to win
England’s Lee Westwood fired a final round 67 on Sunday to win the Thailand Golf Championship by a single shot.
Westwood started the round with two consecutive bogeys but recovered with four birdies on the bounce from the sixth to ninth holes.
He went on to nail three more birdies on the back nine to finish on five-under, and win the title for the second time.
“When I won the Thailand Golf Championship in 2011, I had a pretty big lead. But this win is obviously very special as it was a very tight day out there and I didn’t get off to the best of starts and I had lots of work to do,” he told the Asian Tour website.
“My caddie, Billy told me there were opportunities to pick some shots up in the middle of the round after I made those two bogeys.
“I did that and didn’t drop anymore shots and gave myself lots of chance. This is my last event of the year and it’s nice to finish with a win and go into Christmas and start the New Year with confidence.
“I know what I’ve got to work on and I’ll be doing that over the next six weeks before the season starts again.”
Marcus Fraser went into the final round leading by a single shot after carding a 70 on Saturday.
The Australian arrived at the final hole needing a par to force a play-off against Westwood and a birdie to win outright.
However, he bogied the hole and carded a two-under 70 to finish on seven-under, and tied for second place with Germany’s Martin Kaymer. Kaymer carded a four-under 68 in his final round.
England’s Tommy Fleetwood shot a 70 in the final round to finish fourth, while Australian Scott Hend took fifth place after carding 69.
