Tiger Woods continued his love affair with Torrey Pines on Friday by taking a two-shot lead at the Farmers Insurance Open.

The former world number one, who has an incredible scoring average of 68.6 over 50 rounds at the venue and has won there six times, shot a superb seven-under-par 65 in the second round to take his total to 11 under par and lead by two heading into the weekend.

Starting on the back nine, Woods began slowly with four straight pars, but on the 14th he made the first of his six birdies, adding an eagle-three at the par-five ninth after hitting a five-iron to five feet.

His only blemish came late in the day at the eighth when he drove into a tough lie in the bunker and had to settle for bogey.

"I feel good right now," said Woods. "I'm leading the tournament.

"I've had beautiful practice sessions at home," he added. "If I can do it there, I can do it out here. Even though last week I played only two days [he missed the cut in Abi Dhabi], I felt like I hit the ball well enough to shoot a better score than I did. I had a couple of days to work on it, and I came out here and felt pretty good about it."

Billy Horschel is alone in second place on nine under after he added a 69 to his opening 65, while a group of six players follow a further shot back in a tie for third - Casey Wittenburh (67), Brad Fritsch (67), Erik Compton (65), Steve Marino (68), Jimmy Walker (69) and Josh Teater (70).

"It's a good day and I'm excited about tomorrow - I get to play with Tiger," Horschel said. "I found out when I tapped in for par. I realised he was leading and I was in second place. So yeah, looking forward to that."

Nick Watney is four shots back after a 68, along with the likes of England's Ross Fisher (71).

Defending champion and joint-overnight leader Brandt Snedeker had a bad day, shooting a three-over 75 that dropped him down to T31st on four under, while rounds of 72 and 71 leaves Phil Mickelson on one under, 10 shots off the pace, having only just made the cut.
