Tom Watson has thrown his hat into the ring to be the United States Ryder Cup captain in 2014.

The 63-year-old, who took part in the Australian Open in Sydney over the weekend, admits he would love to return to the United States set-up at Gleneagles, Scotland.

Watson has fond memories of Scotland, having won four of his five Open Championships there, while he also captained the US team victory at The Belfry in England in 1993 - the last time he took part in the event.

The eight-time major winner admits it would be an "honour" if he is asked to return as captain of the Americans for the next edition.

"It would be a great honour if I got tapped on the shoulder," Watson said. "'93 was the last time I've been to a Ryder Cup. I'd like to go back as captain. That would be cool."

David Toms, Fred Couples and Paul Azinger are the others believed to be in the running to captain the United States in 2014.
