Fisher needed to qualify within the top 25 (including ties) at the Q-School event in La Quinta to win his card and made quite sure of his position by securing a joint-second finish.

The Englishman was joined by Steve LeBrun and Kris Blanks on 24-under, with tournament winner Dong-hwan Lee a shot ahead.

Robert Karlsson, another former Ryder Cup player, also made the cut.

It wasn't all plain sailing for some of the bigger names in the field, with Camilo Villegas - once considered one of the Tour's brightest prospects - failing to keep his card, a fate suffered by among others Arjun Atwal, Heath Slocum and Derek Lamely - all of whom have won titles as recently as 2010.
