Open champion Ernie Els has had his name removed from the European Tour money list after failing to play a sufficient number of tournaments.

Regulations state that to be appear on the money list and to be eligible to compete at the World Tour Championship and for or a share of the £2.4million end-of-season bonus pool, a player must have turned out in 13 tournaments.

The South African has only played in 10 tournaments this season and could have still qualified if he had opted to take part in the Singapore Open this week and then either the South African Open or Hong Kong Open next week. However, Els is not scheduled to play until the Asian Tour’s Iskandar Johor Open in mid-December.

Els was listed sixth on the money list prior to his removal and it will be the first time since 1997 that his name does not appear on it.

There are two players who remain on the list despite having played 10 events, with Martin Laird having entered as an affiliate member and John Daly not guaranteed 13 starts by his ‘past winner’ status.
