Van aswegen wins at sun city
While he was winning this curtain raiser to the Nedbank Challenge which tees off today (Thursday) with a six-birdie, four-under-par 68, overnight leader Williams struggled after two solid rounds and only managed to put together two birdies as against four bogeys to shoot a final round 74 that dropped him back into a third-place tie with Botes.
If Van Aswegen was able to post a 12-under-par 204 winning total and take away a first prize of R87,175, it was because he made the best of the slow greens in the third and final round at Lost City
Said an elated van Aswegen, "I feel great with my second win this year and I am absolutely happy as I never thought it would end this way at the start of my final round. I just went out to play without noticing what everyone else was doing.
"I was quite surprised that 12-under was a winning target, but I went out there today and made a few good putts."
Seasoned campaigner Curlewis found himself topping the leaderboard for a while, after carding four birdies and three bogeys on what was the hottest of the three days at this North West Province of South Africa.
Botes also made a charge and headed the scoreboard after an eagle on the 545-meter 11th, but a double-bogey on the 16th cost the 35-year-old the lead and a possible playoff.
Bradford Vaughn (65) turned on 35, but a late charge proved too-little-too-late. He got impressive birdies on the 15th, 16th and 17th, topped with an eagle on the 18th to tie for fifth with George Coetzee (67) and Warren Abery (68).
With this win Van Aswegen has moved from 45th to 34th on the Order of Merit, his first win this season having come at the Vodacom Origins in Pretoria.
