Luiten can light up aloha

Lee Westwood ended a four-year win drought by capturing the Valle Romano Open de Andalucia last year - it was good for him but not for me having tipped both runners-up.

Westy, after an opening 72, shot 20-under over the final 54 holes to beat off Fredrik Andersson Hed and Phillip Archer by two shots and he's just 10/1 to defend his title at the Aloha Golf Club this week.

With 20-under winning and 22 players finishing double digits under par, clearly birdies are the order of the day at this week's shortish par 72 course.

And that's why I fancy a decent wager on Sweden's Johan Edfors at 20/1.

Edfors has spent the first few months of the season racking up birdies and eagles galore.

He's a combined 42-under par for his last three tournaments and has shot a 65 in each of those.

His last five events have yielded three top fives and a top ten and it seems a matter of time before he finally gets his nose in front and adds to the three wins he reeled off in his memorable 2006 campaign.

Edfors also made the top five on his last outing in Spain - a fifth place at the Mallorca Classic in October - so there's a lot of compelling evidence for an each-way punt.

A birdie fest, the chance to use his native tongue and a confidence-boosting sixth place on his last start should also make Ricardo Gonzalez one to watch this week.

The Argentine has scored two of his three European Tour victories on Spanish soil and should be able to devour the four par fives with his massive driving off the tee.

Sure, he's a hit and miss player, who is just as likely to miss the cut but the odds on offer, 66/1, have a definite appeal.

That top six in Dubai came against a quality field and this is a definite drop in class, so if he can make a fast start after over a month off, he can freewheel his way to another title.

One player with a growing reputation for shooting outrageously low scores is Joost Luiten.

His two Challenge Tour wins in 2007 were achieved with scintillating final rounds of 64 and 61 while he also shot a 64 when second in the European Tour's KLM Open in his native Holland last year.

The curly-haired Dutchman has been at it again this season. He shot a weekend 64-67 to finish fourth in the Alfred Dunhill Championship while an opening 64 in the opening round sent him on the way to a top five in the Enjoy Jakarta Astro Indonesia Open last month.

As for his exploits in Spain, Luiten certainly has positive memories having won the 2005 Spanish Amateur Open Championship and finished fourth in the Challenge Tour's Open Mahou de Madrid last season. And, surprise, surprise, he did that due to another low one, a 65, in round two.

Luiten's fearless attitude means he won't back down if he gets on a roll and the 66/1 about this brighest of young stars is well worth a go.

Finally, I'll just have a little on Benn Barham at 150/1.

The Englishman has made a European Tour win his goal this season and it's a decent guess that if he achieves it, the victory will come in Spain.

It was on Spanish soil where he gained his one and only Challenge Tour win in 2005 and two of his last four starts in Spain have seen him finish in the top eight.

Barham played some nice golf to finish tied 15th in the Indian Masters last month and matched that performance in Madeira last week after a strong weekend showing.

He says he's driving it well and holing putts - comments backed up by a look at the stats - and he has extra incentive to do well this week.

The 32-year-old has launched his own fundraising project, 'Barham's Birdie Challenge', to help the charity Demelza House provide hospice care for children with life-limiting illnesses.

Fellow pros and golf fans are donating £1 for every birdie he makes on Tour and this is a great opportunity for him to boost the total.

Barham missed the cut here last year after a poor second round but his opening 69 was three better than eventual winner Westwood and his recent form suggests he can keep it going for all four days this time.

Take a chance at 150s.
