Spieth hits the front at Colonial
World number two Jordan Spieth carded a 65 on Saturday to take a one-shot lead into the final round of the DEAN & DELUCA Invitational.
The two-time major winner, who is looking for his first win in his home state of Texas, is one clear of Webb Simpson and Ryan Palmer, with Harris English (63), Kyle Reifers (67) and Martin Piller (68) a further stroke back.
Spieth went bogey-free for 17 holes before handing a stroke back at the last after a wayward tee shot, an errand drive a frequent occurrence in a round in which he found just four of 14 fairways. However, he made up for it with some fantastic scrambling, while his putter remained hot.
A rare strong iron at the 1th which nearly holed for an eagle followed on from a chip-in at the 11th as 22-year-old pushed on after taking the turn in 32.
A win for Spieth on home soil would certainly go some way to erasing the memories of his Masters collapse.
Palmer (66) and Simpson (67) are best placed to ensure that doesn't happen. Palmer started strongly with birdies on the opening two holes, but then proceeded to make back-to-back bogeys and four and five. They would be the last blemishes of the day for Palmer who add a further four birdies to his card.
Simpson has been there or there about throughout, and the former U.S. Open winner is primed to make a bid for his first PGA Tour title since October 2013. The 30-year-old's round of 67 included six birdies and three bogeys.
English's round of 63 was bettered only by Matt Kuchar who had a bogey-free 63 for his best score in 33 career rounds at Colonial, the world number 20 rocketing up to a tie for ninth as a result.
Like Spieth, Texan Piller will be looking for a win in front of his home fans which include his wife, LPGA Tour player Gerina Piller.
