Pettersson sets up Lowry clash
Last updated: 22nd February 2013
Carl Pettersson and Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano were the last two men to book their places in the Match Play Championship second round on Friday.
With the weather causing havoc on the opening two days following a snowstorm in Arizona, Pettersen and Fernandez-Castano were forced to complete their first-round games on day three.
Pettersen beat American Rickie Fowler at the first extra hole to set up a second-round encounter with Shane Lowry, who upset world number Rory McIlroy on Thursday.
The Swede was one-up after 17 holes overnight but the American made it all square at the par-four 18th, however, Fowler lost the match with a bogey on the 19th.
Fernandez-Castano accounted for Italian Francesco Molinari's exit, winning two-up to qualify for a showdown with Charles Howell, who also pulled off a major upset by knocking out second seed Tiger Woods.
The only previous time the world's top two players were eliminated from the first round of the tournament was in 2002 when Woods and Phil Mickelson fell at the first hurdle.
