Dustin Johnson posted a seven-under-par 66 in his second round, to secure a three-shot lead at the Tournament of Champions.

Johnson, who is currently on 11-under for the tournament, shared the first-round lead with Mark Wilson and Nick Watney. However, his inspired second round performance set him apart from the rest of the field, with the final round to be played on Tuesday.

Trailing Johnson is the tournament's defending champion Steve Stricker, who is currently on eight-under. Also still in the hunt are Masters champion Bubba Watson, Keegan Bradley and FedEx Cup champion Brandt Snedeker.

After posting just two-under during Monday's morning session, Stricker played himself back into contention during round two, where he carded a six-under 66.

If anything Stricker's second round performance would have restored his self-belief, which is critical if he wants to defend his title here at the Plantation Course.

Snedeker, who is proving one of the more consistent goflers on the PGA Tour at the moment, carded a score of 70 in both his opening rounds to keep himself in the hunt for the title.

Speaking after his breathtaking second round performance, Johnson said: "We had not played any golf at all, so I was ready to go."

It is no secret that Johnson is one of the fitter players on the tour and he certainly wasn't daunted by the prospect of playing 36 holes in one day especially in what were still windy conditions.

"This course is a tough walk and it's really windy out there, but I'm in pretty good shape. I can handle it (36 in one day)," he said.

While pundits would feel that he already has one hand on the trophy, the American golfer refuses to get ahead of himself at this critical stage.

"It wouldn't matter if it was 72 or 54 holes. Tomorrow is still the last round and there are still 18 holes to play, so got to get the job done," said a level-headed Johnson.

He will tee off last with Stricker on Tuesday, which could see a thrilling end to what has been a bizarre competition.
