Watson: I hope Tiger is on my team
Last updated: 15th December 2012
They may have had a frosty relationship in the past, but Tom Watson and Tiger Woods are eager to work together for the 2014 Ryder Cup.
Watson, who was appointed new United States Ryder Cup captain on Thursday, has in the past been critical of Woods's on course behaviour and also had plenty to say following the breakdown of the former world number one's marriage three years ago.
However, the hatched has now been buried with Woods saying he is "a really good choice" and he hopes he has "the privilege of joining him on the 2014 United States Team".
The 63-year-old Watson also insisted that his relationship with Woods is "fine".
"I hope Tiger is on my team," he said. "He's the best player maybe in the history of the game. He brings a stature to the team that is unlike any other player on the team.
"And if he's not on the team for any unforeseen reason - and I'm sure he will be - you can bet that he's going to be number one on my pick list.
"My relationship with Tiger is fine. Whatever has been said before is water under the bridge, no issue."
Watson is the seventh American to get more than one shot at the Ryder Cup captaincy and legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus feels he is an excellent choice.
"Tom Watson will do a fine job," Nicklaus said. "Tom always has been a wonderful golfer and he remains one, but Tom is also a good leader."
