Van de Velde makes plane plea

Jean van de Velde has made a "sarcastic" plea for Open organisers to consider hiring a private jet so that he and others can compete in final qualifying next week.
The 1999 runner-up still has to earn a spot in the Turnberry field and is due to tee off just before 9am at Glasgow Gailes on Monday.
But he wonders how he is going to get there in time if he is among the leaders at the French Open in Paris on Sunday. An opening 67 on Thursday put him in joint ninth place.
"Maybe the R&A (Royal and Ancient Club) are going to charter us a jet to fly into Prestwick," he said.
"I'm being a little bit sarcastic. I'm old enough and mature enough to know there are some fights you can't win.
"I haven't booked a flight and I'm going to wait and see what's going on here." One exempt spot is on offer at Le Golf National this week, but some of the players ahead of Van de Velde are also looking for it.
