After winning two US Opens in 2001 and 2004 and being a deserved member of golf's 'Big Five', Goosen has become something of an enigma in recent years. It just seems that Goosen struggles to close the deal nowadays, appearing to lose focus when in pole position. His obvious class still shines through in the big events - especially majors - and he played to recent type when shooting middle rounds of 68-68 in the US Open at Bethpage Black recently before slipping down to 16th with a final round 74. He put in another good showing at Turnberry where he claimed a share of fifth, but again it could have been better as a final round charge failed to materialise, with the South African shooting a two-over par 72 to see his hopes of victory drift away. His record in the USPGA Championship is largely unspectacular with four missed cuts in 11 appearances and just one top-10 finish - that at Baltusrol in 2005. However, he did finish in a tie for 23rd when the event was last held at Hazeltine in 2002 and already has a victory on American soil under his belt this year having won the Transitions Championship in Florida. But there's something about Goosen at present that just fails to convince and you wonder whether the 40-year-old's killer instinct might just have deserted him.
