The 27-year-old from Medellin had his best major performance to date at last year's USPGA - fourth. He also tied for ninth at last year's US Open but those are his only top 10 finishes in 13 major starts - a distinctly ordinary record for a player of his talents. But when he closed out the last campaign with victories at the BMW Championship and the Tour Championship - the final two events of the FedEx Cup play-offs - Villegas proved he has the game to challenge and beat the very best. He has blown rather hot and cold in 2009, after a slick start to the season which included a couple of top-five finishes, a brief flirtation with the European Tour and a career-best 13th at The Masters, the Colombian has gone off the boil somewhat with just three top 10s and one top five. He is not a million miles away as he proved by tying for 14th at the Players Championship in May, while he battled hard to finish 33rd at the US Open at a rain-soaked Bethpage Black. The USPGA has been a breakthrough major for plenty of good players in recent times and Villegas fits the bill if he gets hot this week.
