In theory Jim Furyk is as perfectly suited for the PGA Championship as he is for the US Open: he is very straight, very solid and completely unflappable. But the truth is that he hasn't made the top ten in this tournament in the last six years. He does have four top tens in this event however and one of them did come here at Hazeltine in 2002 - indeed he led the tournament after the first round. Despite that round of 68 he later sounded a little negative about his chances on the Minnesota layout, worrying that his lack of length made the course more difficult for him. Until recently Furyk had rediscovered some consistency in his game, gaining his tenth top ten finish in under a year in the AT&T National at Congressional. But since a 76 in the final round at Turnberry derailed his chances there he has limped to 25th at one of his favourite venues Warwick Hills in the Buick Open and then failed to make the top fifty in Firestone. So although the instinct suggests that Furyk is a tidy PGA Championship contender, the stats say he hasn't done well in the event and the recent form indicates that there is no reason to expect that to change soon.
