Discussions of Lee Westwood's merits as a potential major winner are beginning to sound like the records of a singer who has been around too long: everyone knows what he does so well it is starting to drive the public nuts. And, of course, his latest attempt to change the record in the Open Championship at Turnberry actually just sounded exactly like all the others: no-one can argue with the quality, few can quibble with the craftsmanship, but in the end it was the same old tune as he came up a little short of actually winning. Of course no-one will be more frustrated by this than Westwood himself - he freely admits that his inability to make the most of a gilt-edged opportunity has caused him anguish. And yet every near miss makes the next one a little more fraught and difficult to convert. With memories of his three bogeys in the final four holes at Turnberry (topped off with a rash three-putt on the final green) all too raw and recent you suspect this will not be the week he breaks his major duck. Especially when you consider that he has played the event 12 times and has a best finish of 15th.
