Poor old Stewart Cink will always be remembered as the man who stomped all over golf's impossible dream. It was Cink who beat the 59-year-old Tom Watson in a play-off at this year's Open when all the world (with the exception of Cink's immediate family, his caddie and maybe one or two of his closest friends) were desperate for Watson to win a sixth Open title. Cink's first major will always be overshadowed in the popular consciousness by Watson's heroic failure, but the man from Alabama was a worthy winner. On his record, he was one of the more deserving major champions of recent times. He had previously won more than $27m in official prize money and had eight top 10s in majors and nine in World Championship events - including one win. He also performed brilliantly down the stretch at Turnberry, playing the last three holes in three-under to earn that play-off chance. Now that he has finally made the breakthrough it would not be that surprising if Cink - who finished 10th here back in 2002 - emulated Padraig Harrington by winning back-to-back majors this year.
