One of the main storylines at Turnberry last month was whether Ross Fisher would leave the course if his wife went into labour. He kept insisting he would but plenty thought otherwise when he finished Saturday's third round just one off the pace. Fisher then burst into a two-shot lead on Sunday and looked hot favourite to claim the Claret Jug but while his wife held on, he couldn't. The Englishman racked up a quadruple bogey eight at the fifth and never recovered, eventually finishing tied 13th. However, it was his second successive brush with victory in a major. He played superbly from tee to green to finish tied for fifth (low European) in the US Open at Bethpage Black and had his putter been hotter, Fisher could easily have left New York a major champion. This is only Fisher's fourth year on tour, but already he's made a huge impression. He's posted two wins (2007 KLM Open and 2008 European Open), and earlier this year he lost to Paul Casey in the semi-final of the WGC Accenture Match Play in Arizona before again finishing runner-up to his compatriot in the BMW PGA Championship, the flagship event on the European Tour. "Winning majors is what it's all about," says Fisher and the way he's going he could bag one sooner rather than later. If he's not had too many sleepless nights following the birth of his baby (who eventually arrived two weeks late!), expect him to challenge again here.
