A good rule of thumb when calculating what club you should use into the teeth of the wind is to work on a basis that a 10 mile-an-hour wind will need one extra club (say an eight instead of a nine), a 20 mph wind two extra clubs (a seven instead of a nine) and so on.

That's why you will hear experienced golfers talking about one, two or even three or four club winds when it really gets up.
