Garcia amazed by course record
Despite two bogeys and a triple bogey, Sergio Garcia equalled the course record at the Jumeirah Golf Estates’ Earth course.
Despite two bogeys and a triple bogey, Sergio Garcia equalled the course record at the Jumeirah Golf Estates’ Earth course.
Playing his second round in the DP World Tour Championship, Garcia produced an incredible round filled with ups and downs.
Coming off a first round 73, the Spaniard started strongly, notching up four birdies in his first five holes. A further birdie at the eighth ensured Garcia took the turn in 31.
Amazingly Garcia didn’t register a single par on his back nine, producing four birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey at the 16th.
Perhaps fittingly it was an 18-foot eagle putt from just off the back of the final green that saw Garcia become just the sixth player to card a 64.
The record round has propelled Garcia back into contention, ending on seven-under-par with the early clubhouse lead held by Branden Grace on ten-under.
“It was unbelievable, wasn’t it?” he said after the round.
It is the 32-year-old’s first competition since the Ryder Cup in September after undergoing surgery to correct an astigmatic eye.
“I’m still kind of getting used to it,” he said of his eyesight.
“My sight’s not changed immensely, but the main reason was that with contact lenses I was feeling very uncomfortable,” he added.
