RETURNING TO WREKIN

24-11-2010 10:27

My love of golf owes much to watching the old World Matchplay Championship - great golfers going head-to-head between the golden autumnal trees of the West Course at Wentworth.

Inspired by the television pictures, and also motivated by the fact that two local boys (Ian Woosnam and Sandy Lyle) were major winners, I decided to try the game for myself. So I ended up at Wrekin GC in Wellington, Shr...

Saturday - the final round
A quick reminder: at the start of play Australian Daniel Gaunt led on six-under-par, holding a two-shot lead over final round playing partner Bernd Wiesberger of Austria. He had a three-shot lead over the third member of his three-ball, American Chris Baker, plus Sweden's Peter Gustafsson and Englishman Matt Haines who were playing in the penultimate group.

MATT COOPER IN FINLAND

Hot Pace

For the third time this year the South African Lee-Anne Pace completed victory.

Two weeks ago she won on the links course at Conwy, a result that was reminiscent of Louis Oosthuizen's win at St Andrews. Today also reminded observers of Oosthuizen's Open performance but in this case it was less because of the conditions than the manner of her complete dominance of the field....

FRIDAY

Looking for another exciting Finnish

This is the sixth running of the Finnair Masters. Two years ago local girl Minea Blomqvist triumphed to send the home crowds happy and last year Beatriz Recari completed victory with arguably the shot of the season.

She began her week with rounds of 65 and 64 to take control of the event only to be caught in the final round by Denm...

SUNDAY

Final round

The final day dawned bright and sunny. In fact by mid-afternoon it was actually so warm the galleries were craving a bit of wind to cool us down.

I wrote at the end of yesterday that my secret equation indicated that it was a two-horse race between Lee-Anne Pace (-4) and Christel Boeljon (-2). It didn't quite work out like that, but the winner did emerge f...

SATURDAY
Sight-seeing
There is lots to see and do in this neck of the woods. On my way up here on Wednesday I popped into Portmeirion, the bizarre Italianate village that was the location for original Prisoner television series.
I thought of the catch phrase of that series today when I heard Linda Wessberg leave a green and an official ask what her number she was. She answered, "...

FRIDAY

Pernilla Lindberg

One of the most impressive under-that-radar performances two weeks ago at the Ricoh Women's British Open was that of Pernilla Lindberg, the young Swede who turned pro at the start of the year having graduarted succesfully from both LET and LPGA Tour Q-Schools.

She has been able to split her time between the two tours easily because of the slightly fr...

Windy Wales

Twelve months ago the windy roads of north Wales were a big talking point amongst the players, especially the continental contingent who were a little flabbergasted by the tight and twisting B roads and Welsh language road signs.

They all had satnavs but that was little help as they tried to navigate from Manchester airport to Harlech via the Snowdonian...

A MONTH OF LADIES GOLF

28-07-2010 09:10

Over the next month the Ladies European Tour is camped on British and Irish shores.

The four week period begins with the Ricoh Women's British Open at Royal Birkdale in Southport - the highlight of the LET calendar year and boosted, as always, by the presence of the finest talent from the LPGA.
But in the following three weeks you can catch the LET in every corner of our islands.

The AIB I...

EYES TURN TO RYDER CUP

21-07-2010 07:44

The Open may have only finished on Sunday and the final major of the year, the USPGA Championship, is just a few weeks away, but attention is already turning to October's Ryder Cup.
In fairness, the Ryder Cup is never far from the thoughts of the media as soon as the qualifying period gets under way, with the biennial contest an obvious angle for a story whenever a European player wins a tourname...
