Dave Tindall: Profit with palmer
23-07-2008 11:16
It's not impossible for those who battled Birkdale for four straight days to contend with a different time zone and win this week's Canadian Open at Glen Abbey in Ontario.
Indeed, Jim Furyk shook off a draining week at Carnoustie last year to win this very event for the second year running.
However, all the market leaders this week went four rounds at Birkdale and I prefer to play the bigger pri...

Matthew Freemantle: The dog that bit back
20-07-2008 08:53
It is a fairly straightforward dogleg par four, but with howling winds and a ludicrous pin position, the 10th at Birkdale served up a comedy of errors on day three.
Most notable was Peter Hanson's four putt from 15 feet. The Swede might have been thinking birdie when he stood above his first putt, which looked fairly straightforward from the back of the green.
Something bad must have happened to...

Harry the Hat: Watch out for paul goydos

The Open has had a rather subdued run up to tee-off this year that in part is due to the absence of Tiger Woods.
Tiger is the headline maker throughout the world and when he's not playing there is definitely less press coverage of golf.
Despite the huge impact he has on the world of golf Sergio Garcia was right when he said that the Open is more important than anyone individual and when Tiger ...

Dave Tindall: Beware the injured golfer

My Tips who made the cut were: Steve Stricker e.w. at 80-1, Jim Furyk e.w. at 25/12010: And that's it for another year. Padraig Harrington gives some good answers in his press conference and says his best trait is his ability to learn. The PA's Mark Garrod informs him that he's up to number three in the world and Padraig is very comfortable with that position. He even comes out with...

Matthew Freemantle: Is old the new young?

Tiger Woods' absence from this year's Open Championship was always going to make the leaderboard peculiar reading, but nobody would have bet on this.
Near the end of the second round, the 137th Open was being led by a 53-year-old who hasn't won in a decade and his closest pursuer was a vertigo sufferer. With the exception of the defending champion Padraig Harrington, the first page of the leaderb...

The Open is once again upon us. It seems like there has been a rather subdued run up to the event this year which is in part due to the absence of Tiger Woods.

Neville Leck: Kim - tiger hunter of the future?
08-07-2008 11:16
Mark O'Meara is one of the many pundits who see a bright future for Anthony Kim, the 23-year-old American national of Korean descent who won the AT&T National on Sunday.
But only now that the Los Angeles-born, Oklahoma graduate has done an about turn on the unhealthy direction his career was taking less than a year ago.
O'Meara, a two-time major winner and friend and confidant of Tiger Woods, t...

Matthew Freemantle: Old school
17-07-2008 19:22
In music, 2008 has been the year of the revival. Bands who have been out of action for years, sometimes even decades, were pulling themselves back into their tight leather jeans and headlining the biggest dates across Europe.
80s punk heroes The Sex Pistols were one the bandwagon and, by all accounts, worked out just fine, despite their lead singer's insults now sounding less like the voice of th...

Harry the Hat: Travesties of justice

Two travesties of justice in two days! It's more than any mortal man should have to suffer.
The first being the fisherman Pablo Larrazabal winning the French Open and cleaning out my betting balance, which was hard earned on Ladies Day at Royal Ascot and topped by one my greyhounds doing the business at Wimbledon on Friday Night. (Had a falling out with one the other owners so shares up for sale...
